What GISConverter does

GISConverter converts vector, CAD, GPS and tabular geodata between the formats mapping people actually swap files in: KML and KMZ from Google Earth, Esri Shapefiles, GeoJSON for web maps, GeoPackage, GPX tracks, DXF drawings, and CSV or Excel tables that carry latitude and longitude columns. It reprojects coordinates between systems too, so data written in WGS84 (EPSG:4326), Web Mercator (EPSG:3857) or a UTM zone lands where it should. It does not touch imagery or raster grids; this is a features-and-attributes tool, not a picture converter.

How it works

Under the hood is GDAL/OGR, the same open-source engine that powers QGIS and most professional GIS software, compiled to WebAssembly so it runs as code inside your browser tab. There is no server in the loop. When you drop a file, it is read from your own machine's memory, converted locally, and handed straight back to you as a download. Because nothing is uploaded, GISConverter is safe for sensitive data, client parcels, survey points, unpublished site boundaries, that you cannot send to a third-party server.

Three steps

1. Drop your file. Drag any supported file onto the box, or click to browse. The format is detected in the browser and the possible outputs appear.

2. Pick the output and, if needed, a coordinate system. Choose the target format; optionally set an EPSG code to reproject. A map preview confirms the data is where you expect before you commit.

3. Convert and download. The conversion runs on your device in seconds and the result downloads directly, Shapefiles arrive zipped so their .shp, .shx, .dbf and .prj parts stay together.

Which format do you need?

Popular conversions

Most visitors arrive for one of a handful of jobs. To move Google Earth work into desktop GIS, convert KML to a shapefile; to go the other way and view a GIS layer in Google Earth, turn a shapefile into KML. To map a spreadsheet of coordinates, convert CSV to KML. For web mapping, convert KML to GeoJSON, and to unpack a zipped Google Earth file, extract KMZ to KML.

Frequently asked questions

Is GISConverter really free?

Yes. Every converter is free and unlimited, with no trial, no paid tier and no per-file charge. Because the work happens in your browser rather than on servers we have to pay for, there is nothing to meter.

Is my data uploaded to a server?

No. Your file is read and converted entirely inside your browser using GDAL compiled to WebAssembly. It never travels to us or anyone else, so nothing can be stored, logged or leaked. The only network request is for the map basemap tiles, which come from OpenStreetMap and never include your data.

Is there a file size limit?

There is no fixed limit we impose. The practical ceiling is your device's memory, since the whole conversion runs in the browser tab. Typical KML, Shapefile and GeoJSON files convert instantly; very large files (hundreds of megabytes) may run slower or hit the browser's memory limits on modest hardware.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once loaded. The GDAL engine downloads the first time you convert and is then cached, so subsequent conversions work even with no connection. The map preview needs the internet only to fetch basemap tiles; the conversion itself does not.

Which browsers are supported?

Any current desktop or mobile browser that supports WebAssembly, which means recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. No plugin or extension is required. A desktop browser is more comfortable for larger files and for reviewing the map preview.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up, login or email required. Open the page, drop your file and convert. Since nothing is uploaded, there is no account for us to attach your files to in the first place.

Supported formats

GISConverter handles vector, CAD, GPS and spreadsheet formats. It does not convert raster imagery such as GeoTIFF, which needs different handling.
